Program Description

The Acute Assessment Program is a 20-bed acute care mental health program that functions in a manner similar to a general hospital psychiatric program. The program is divided into two separate components: an extra care area, where acutely distressed mental health clients are admitted for general observation utilizing an interprofessional team approach to assess and offer short-term treatment of acute mental health problems. Model of service is acute mental health.

Access Information

Referrals for regional (non-forensic) programs are received by the Central Intake Office and reviewed by a team of clinicians. It is expected prior to referral to the Acute Assessment Program, community resources, including crisis assessment, will have been undertaken. Results of these assessments will be requested at the time of referral.
Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care does not have emergency medical or diagnostic capacities and therefore we cannot admit individuals who may require this level of medical intervention. A medical clearance process exists and requires a physician-to-physician dialogue to endorse that the person being referred can be safely managed in our facility.
In order to be admitted, a patient must meet one or more of the following criteria: the individual is experiencing a first episode or acute exacerbation of a mental health disorder; and/or the individual is experiencing symptoms of extreme stress to a degree that the individual cannot be supported in the community.
There are also exclusion criteria, which include: acute intoxication (i.e., blood alcohol level greater than 2.0); acute medical problems that should be dealt with first in a general hospital; and the patient must be medically clear 48 to 72 hours after a significant overdose.
Admission will be accepted 7 days per week, 24 hours a day for both voluntary and involuntary individuals.
