Georgianwood Program for Concurrent Disorders

Type of Service

Program Description

Georgianwood is a three month voluntary residential treatment program based on best practices for concurrent disorders. Individuals are assessed for admission and placed into one of two streams: the Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) stream, which provides treatment primarily for patients with anxiety and depressive disorders; or the Skills stream, which offers skills training for patients with a serious mental illness such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Access Information

Referrals for regional (non-forensic) programs are received by the Central Intake Office and reviewed by a team of clinicians. Referrals from physicians, preferably psychiatrists, are accepted. Telephone triage and/or a pre-admission consultation will be scheduled after a completed referral is received. Eligibility: Individuals who are residents of Ontario and have an identified mental illness (e.g., schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety disorder) as well as a substance abuse problem are eligible. Patients are required to be free from all substances 72 hours prior to admission. While in the residential program, patients must commit to abstinence from alcohol and illicit drugs for the duration of their treatment. Stable housing is a requirement as it is expected that the individual will return home for weekend passes. Transportation arrangements must be in order to get home for weekend passes. A graduated program of weekend passes into the community begins by the second week so patients have an opportunity to practice their new skills in the community or their home environment. This is a key step in relapse prevention. All patients are expected to be able to go back to their home communities on their passes. For patients who live farther away, we do expect that they or their family members will find a way for them to get back home for at least some of their passes. Also, a willingness to attend our residential treatment program and an ability to participate in a voluntary program and concentrate on the program's curriculum is required. Georgianwood is a non-smoking facility. No one is allowed to smoke in any of the buildings or on the grounds. Exclusionary Criteria: The program is not geared toward individuals with severe cognitive dysfunction (e.g. intellectual disability, acquired brain injury, dementia) or a primary Axis II diagnosis. Individuals must be tapered off methadone, benzodiazepines, opiates and stimulants before attending treatment. Referrals will not be accepted for individuals with current criminal charges.
