Program Description

The Child and Youth Mental Health Program (CYMHP), McMaster Children's Hospital, is a mental health program for children and youth, age 0 to their 18th birthday, and their families in which the child and/or youth is experiencing serious and complex mental disorder(s) with significant associated psychosocial impairment and often co-morbid conditions. Day treatment is one of the services within the CYMHP. The day treatment program provides treatment on a daily basis, Monday through Friday, to children and youth with serious and complex mental disorders. Day treatment services are intended for those who cannot benefit from less intrusive mental health interventions or where treatment in a less intrusive service compromises the well-being of the client. Day treatment serves youth 13-18 years old to either increase support to avert an inpatient admission or for those transitioning back to the community after an inpatient stay. Programming for day treatment is group-based. A Section 23 classroom is integrated into the day treatment to assist patients with their academic needs. A detailed orientation and screening process is required for acceptance into the program.
