Program Description

The mission of the Native Healer Program is to connect First Nations individuals to the elders of their community, who will then make traditional Anishinaabe medicine and health teachings available. Program staff functions as broker to arrange connection with elders, who provide culturally appropriate support. The program is based on a holistic, wellness model. The Native Healer Program also facilitates cultural awareness and sensitivity training for all staff of Lake of the Woods District Hospital. The program functions as a liaison with the First Nations communities surrounding Kenora, which gives them a voice in their health care, and an opportunity to address any concerns. Patients of Lake of the Woods District Hospital and clients of community programs may access the program. Social workers are part of the hospital integrated social work service and will accept referrals during daily rounds.
