Family Initiatives

Program Description

Durham Mental Health Services' Family Support program offers support and assistance to family members of individuals with mental health issues. The program provides families with individual support, including counselling, information, education, advocacy, and linkage to services, as well as peer group support. The goal of the program is to help clients maintain and enhance their role as caregivers.

Our community mental health workers can provide families information and education regarding:
- mental illness and recovery
- treatment options
- community resources and services
- income supports including Canada Pension Plan, Ontario Disability Support Plan, and Ontario Works
- coping strategies;
- effective communication
- crisis management
- navigating the mental health and related systems

Advocacy and support are provided with
- one-on-one supportive listening to deal with the emotional aspects of caring for someone with a mental illness
- facilitation of family support groups to assist and support family members
- linkage to and coordination of needed community resources and services
- the development of robust support systems
- sharing skills and expertise with other family members
- promoting self-advocacy

Access Information

The Family Support program is open to residents of Durham Region, 16 years of age and older, who care for or have been impacted by a family member with a mental illness.

Applications can be made by the individual requesting service or by a third-party referral (family member, psychiatrist, community support, etc.) Application forms can be obtained by calling our Central Intake or by downloading from our website, No toll-free line, but callers are welcome to call Central Intake collect.
