Emphasis is placed on reintegration of the well patient back into the community by incorporating discharge planning as a priority in the treatment planning process. The multidisciplinary team consists of psychiatrists, general practitioners, nurses, social workers, recreation therapist, dietician, pharmacists, chaplains and other allied disciplines as required. Model of service is psychiatric stabilization and biopsychosocial rehabilitation.

Access Information

Serves adults 19 years of age and older whose mental health needs cannot be met on an outpatient basis. The 10 acute care inpatient beds are used for acutely ill adults who need a 24-hour protective, therapeutic environment and close professional assessment and stabilization. Admissions to the acute care unit are facilitated primarily through the Emergency Psychiatric Unit. Criteria for admission include: high-risk of harm to self or others; acute psychiatric states including psychosis or acute stress response syndromes requiring assessment and treatment in a safe, supervised setting. Goals of an inpatient stay are to: assess and stabilize; clarify the diagnosis; initiate treatment; educate the patient and family about the disorder, its treatment and management; and connect with community resources for ongoing assessment and treatment. Note: the inpatient unit is not appropriate for ongoing treatment of eating disorders, forensics and Organic Brain Disorder.
