Understanding Eating Disorders
Eating disorders are serious mental health conditions that involve unhealthy relationships with food, weight, and body image. They can have significant emotional, physical, and social consequences. Signs that someone may be struggling with an eating disorder include drastic changes in eating habits, obsessive focus on weight or body shape, extreme dieting, or patterns of bingeing and purging. Early recognition and support can make a critical difference.
Types of Eating Disorders
Anorexia Nervosa
Anorexia nervosa is characterized by severe restriction of food intake, intense fear of gaining weight, and a distorted body image. Risk factors may include genetic predisposition, societal pressures, and emotional stress. Physical consequences can include malnutrition, weakened bones, and heart complications, while emotional effects may include anxiety, depression, and social withdrawal.
Bulimia
Bulimia involves repeated episodes of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviours such as vomiting, excessive exercise, or fasting. Individuals may feel a loss of control during binge episodes. Bulimia can result in gastrointestinal problems, dental issues, electrolyte imbalances, and emotional distress including guilt and shame.
Binge Eating Disorder
Binge eating disorder is marked by recurrent episodes of consuming large quantities of food without purging. People with this disorder may experience feelings of guilt, shame, and distress. It can lead to weight gain, high blood pressure, diabetes, and emotional challenges like anxiety or depression.
